The Late Night With Jimmy Fallon drummer, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, will no longer be able to select songs for the show without first clearing them with three NBC execs. Questlove, the drummer for Fallon’s house band, The Roots, chose the song ”Lyin’ Ass Bitch” when Rep. Michele Bachmann (R), a Republican presidential nominee hopeful, appeared on the late night talk show recently.
“I’m gunning for Bachmann,” he said. “I want to try and do Fishbone’s ‘Lyin’ Ass Bitch.’ I just don’t know if I’m going to tell Jimmy.”
While Bachmann didn’t object on camera, the song’s lyrics caused a huge stir and NBC had to apologize. Questlove told the magazine he was awakened by a 9 a.m. call the next morning summoning him to 30 Rock. He was told he must clear every song with three different NBC execs, and he was forbidden to tweet about the incident.
“It was a real bummer,” adds Fallon. “We don’t want to censor anyone, but … I don’t know. Maybe Questlove is a Romney guy.”
This was not the first time the show’s musical director has run afoul with his selections. Fallon had to censor Questlove’s previous choices of intro music when he wanted to use “She Blinded Me With Science” to introduce Katie Holmes, a prominent follower of Scientology. The New York Post reported his reaction to Fallon nixing the Thomas Dolby 80’s hit “That would have been good,” Questlove laughed.
