Yamaha: Advancing The Art Of Drumming For 45 Years

Company Creates Several Industry Standard Products; Continues Fruitful Collaborations With Musicians |Rochester drums | Examiner.com.

Since 1967, Yamaha Drums has set the standard for innovation in the drumming world. The process of manufacturing drum shells begins with select woods. Introducing precision processing that combined a staggered diagonal seam with the Air-Seal System, which puts even pressure on the shell’s inner surface to create a perfectly round shell with uniform thickness and excellent durability, Yamaha created a revolution in drum manufacturing.

From there, the company made its mark with the legendary Recording Custom set, known as the most recorded drum set in history, which established a pinnacle in sound and quality. Three years ago, Yamaha Drums introduced the flagship PHX kit, a hybrid shell that includes hard, resonant jatoba and kapur wood never before used in a drum kit. The PHX’s adoption by several of the world’s great drummers attests to its quality. Since then, Yamaha continues to introduce new products that excite drummers and music fans, including the Rock Tour, Club Custom and an overhauled Absolute line. Yamaha even re-designed its hardware to provide increased operability, stability and durability.

Hardware inventions include the hideaway cymbal boom arm, locking hi-hat clutch, a ball joint tom mount that rotates 360 degrees and interchangeable pipe diameters to provide maximum flexibility in hardware set-up. Yamaha high-performance lugs ensure ease of use and the Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System (YESS) creates a high-resonating shell. At this year’s NAMM show, Yamaha also introduces the new HexRack II, the lightest, strongest drum rack in the business.

Of course, Yamaha couldn’t do it alone: the company receives support, input and guidance from drumming legends and a huge list of well-respected performers and instructors from every genre of music, including Carter Beauford, Keith Carlock, Billy Cobham, Dave Garibaldi, Roy Haynes, Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Dafnis Prieto, ?uestlove and Dave Weckl.

“Created in conjunction with musicians, Yamaha Drums has never scrimped on the creation of its drums, including acoustically engineered designs and the skills of the company’s master craftsmen,” said David Jewell, marketing manager, Yamaha Drums, Pro Audio & Combo Division. “With the inspiration of our artists, Yamaha Drums will continue to our mission of blending new technology with rich history to create incomparable instruments and experiences far into the future.”

One of the most high-profile drummers that plays Yamaha Drums is Rochester, NY’s own Steve Gadd. According to his bio on Yamaha’s website,

“Steve Gadd is one of the most sought-after studio musicians, in the world.”

Gadd attended the Manhattan School of Music for two years, then finished at Eastman School of Music. Before that, he studied privately with Bill and Stanley Street and John Beck. He established himself with another Rochestarian, Chuck Mangione, then spent three years in the Army prior to coming to New York and doing studio work in 1971.

Steve Gadd is one of the most sought-after studio musicians, in the world. Regarded as the most influential drummer in contemporary music, Gadd can play anything, easily bridging different musical styles. His feel, technique, and musicality on such tunes as Paul Simon’s “Fifty Ways”, Steely Dan’s “Aja”, and Chick Corea’s “Nite Sprite” were so awe-inspiring and his concepts so innovative that they instantly assured his special position in the history of the percussive arts.

He rapidly rose to prominence on the studio scene and has since played with a wide variety of artists, including Carly Simon, Phoebe Snow, Aretha Franklin, Al DiMeola, Stanley Clarke, Rickie Lee Jones, Tom Scott, Frank Sinatra, and Stuff.

After a period of touring and recording with his own band, the Gadd Gang, he provided the spark that ignited Paul Simon’s South African inspired, Grammy Award-winning recordings and dynamic live touring band.

Today, Gadd is as busy as ever, balancing frequent recording dates with a hectic touring schedule. Some artists include Eric Clapton, David Sanborn, Marcus Miller, Joe Sample, and jazz piano virtuoso Michel Petrucciani.

A Different Type of Dutch Master: The Enigmatic Han Bennink A True Solo Artist – Rochester drums | Examiner.com.

In honor of his 70th birthday, Han Bennink is celebrating with a world tour. Who is Han Bennink, you ask? Well, Han is an improvisational musician and artist. His primary instrument is the drum set. However, to call him a drummer would be very misleading.

Bennink was born near Amsterdam in 1942. His first percussion instrument was a kitchen chair. Later his father, an orchestra percussionist, supplied him with a more Han Benninkconventional drum set, but Han never lost his taste for coaxing sounds from unlikely objects, according to his biography,

In the 1960s, Bennink was quickly recognized as an uncommonly versatile drummer. As a hard swinger in the tradition of his hero, Kenny Clarke, he accompanied such American stars as Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy and Dexter Gordon. He is heard with Dolphy on the 1964 classic “Last Date” (PolyGram).

Bennink participated in the creation of a European improvised music scene, and with fellow Dutch pioneers, pianist Misha Mengelberg and saxophonist Willem Breuker, he founded the still-active musicians collective “Instant Composers Pool” in 1967.

Bennink anchored various bands led by Mengelberg or Breuker, and appeared in their comic music-theater productions.
Bennink attended art school in the 1960s, and is also a successful visual artist in several media, often constructing sculpture from found objects, which may include broken drum heads and sticks. He has designed the covers for many LPs and CDs on which he appears.

Over the years, Bennink has toured tirelessly and appeared on hundreds of recordings with the likes of South African bassist Harry Miller, soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, trombonists Roswell Rudd and Ray Anderson, and big-band leaders Sean Bergin and Andy Sheppard.

It is nearly impossible to describe Bennink’s style. However this quote sums it up:

“…few drummers can seem as convincingly unhinged as Mr. Bennink. … is a pillar of the European free-improvising scene, and a touchstone for the rambunctious wing of the contemporary avant-garde.” -New York Times 2006

Bennink is not scheduled to appear in Rochester, NY. However, he played a free concert at The Bop Shop, in Rochester on January 21st, 2009. A blurb on their website, they said this about Hans:

“Bennink’s solo music is something all together unique. He can make music with a snare and a chair or a full kit. He’ll play the floor, the walls, furniture, virtually anything. One never knows what to expect from Bennink. But whatever it is, we think we’re all going to be in for a real treat.”

Black Keys vs Nickelback: Rock and Roll Smackdown

Black Keys vs Nickelback: Rock and Roll War of Words, Sort Of – Rochester drums | Examiner.com.

As reported here yesterday, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney had some unkind things to say about ultra-popular band, Nickelback.

In the Rolling Stone cover story, Carney originally said,

“Rock & roll is dying because people became O.K. with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world. So they became O.K. with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be shit.”

Throug the joys of social media and immediate communication, Nickelback retorted through their official Twitter account, @nickelback,

“Thanks to the drummer in the Black Keys calling us the Biggest Band in the World in Rolling Stone. Hehe.”

Of course Nickelback chose to overlook the fact that Carney also called them “shit” and “watered-down, post-grunge crap”

Maybe they know how to handle the hate. Back in November 2011, fans in Detroit circulated a petition in protest of Nickelback, who hail from Canada, being chosen as the halftime entertainment during the high-profile Thanksgiving Day NFL game. According to the petition:

“This game is nationally televised, do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions? This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs. The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime.”

“We get that all the time. We’ve never really been a critics’ darling or anything like that… The people speak. We sell a lot of records and fill a lot of arenas, and we don’t hear many complaints,” frontman Chad Kroeger told Billboard at the time.

Can’t we all just get along?

Do you live in the Rochester, NY area? You can find the latest releases from Nickelback and the Black Keys at local stores, including The Record Archive and The House Of Guitars. While both bands played in the Rochester area in 2010, neither is currently scheduled to appear here in the near future.

Black Keys Drummer Patrick Carney Blames Rock & Rolls State on Nickelback – Rochester drums | Examiner.com.

It isn’t everyday that a member of one major rock band jumps ugly with another major rock band. Well, this is not everyday.

In the new issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, Patrick Carney, drummer for the Black Keys, did just that.

“Rock & roll is dying because people became OK with

Patrick Carney, playing at SXSW in 2010

Nickelback being the biggest band in the world…”

It appears that Carney is not a fan of  Chad Kroeger and his fellow Canadians. Carney goes on to say that because Nickelback is the biggest band around these days, and they are “watered-down, post-grunge crap, horrendous shit”, people now feel inferior music is acceptable from the most popular acts.

“When people start lumping us into that kind of shit, it’s like, ‘Fuck you,’ honestly.”

Both bands have played in the Rochester, NY area. The Black Keys opened for the Flaming Lips in 2010 at the CMAC. Nickelback was here in 2010 as well, Darien Lake Performing Arts Center.
It will be interesting to see if Nickelback has some type of response. If they do, I’ll do my best to bring it to you.
